International Womens Day March - 1955-1956
On 9 August On 9 August 1956 20 000 women of all races, some with the babies on their backs, from the cities and towns, from homelands and villages, took a petition addressed to Prime Minister J. G. Strijdom to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. He was not in. The petition demanded the abolition of pass laws. Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Sophie Williams and Radima Moosa delivered the petition to the office of the Prime Minister, but had to leave without achieving their goal.
