Alison Smith is a senior correspondent and anchor with CBC News and CBC Television's The National. She also anchors the weekend newscast Sunday Report.

Alison has reported extensively on the September 11 attacks, their aftermath and the one-year anniversary.

She has anchored live coverage of the Queen Mother's funeral and the Golden Jubilee celebrations in London for Queen Elizabeth as well as the monarch's visit to Canada. She also followed the Pope's visit to Toronto for World Youth Day.

Alison was on the air the day CBC Newsworld launched 10 years ago, going on to host programs such as the interview program The Lead and the network's flagship news program Newsworld Reports.

She has covered a wide range of major stories, both at home and abroad, including the death of Princess Diana, the 50th Anniversary of the State of Israel and South Africa's first multi-racial election.

She covered the floods in Manitoba, the Referendum in Quebec and of course every budget and federal election.

Alison began her television career in Toronto in 1977. She worked as a reporter in the CBC Toronto newsroom, moving to The National in 1982 where she worked as a national reporter and assignment editor.

She has also reported for the business program Venture and in 1991 hosted Newsmagazine.

She was born and raised in Osoyoos, British Columbia. She was educated at the University of British Columbia and was a Gold Medallist upon graduation from Ryerson Polytechnic Institute in Toronto.
